Back in 7th grade, I had a friend who was really religious.

He was brought up a Christian Scientist and I was just getting very interested in it too.

When God cannot heal your dental caries and only the dentist with a drill and a potentially lethal mix of mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc can, there is something seriously wrong somewhere. Some people don't seem to be bothered that much having to rely so heavily on the conventional dentist "torture" treatment while having the potential possibility of mercury poisoning for life. Even worse is the fact that most dental work eventually must be replaced with even larger fillings and often even root canals and finally dentures. And such drastically unnatural treatments are rarely without side-effects or other health consequences and complications. This expensive "torture" never ends, because, even those who regularly visit a dentist, brush and floss after every meal and avoid sweets often continue to lose just as many teeth as one who never bothers with dentists in the first place.

I never forgot the first few times I had to get cavities drilled and filled! Gagging over and over again on dental X-ray films stuffed deep inside my mouth while being exposed to dangerous X-rays; that awful dreading and anticipation of the next "drill and fill" appointment; that freaky "smoking" smell of the tooth enamel as the drill gets hotter and hotter while trying not to gag on it! That unforgettable horrible sensation of the nerves being invaded into by that hellish drill! Eeeeeeeech!!!! This form of torture is indeed no solution, just another problem of constantly dreading the next time I have to get teeth filled. If only they could simply fill them, it was the drilling sensation that I found absolutely ghastly. It was enough to give me the screaming willies! I think I'd much rather allow my teeth to rot out than ever go through that horror again! I was 13 when I had my last filling and decided then and there I was never going to get another, no matter what!

Is there no alternative to "drill, fill and bill"? Surely nature cannot be so stupid as to simply allow teeth to rot and eventually fall out costing millions of hapless individuals billions of dollars in dental bills! Obviously it can only be something that humans are doing wrong and not nature.

And it is, no doubt, the modern American diet (MAD) that is so appalling, so opposite to what the body truly needs for a healthy existence. Primitive Diets from the Stone Age Were Rich in a "Factor X" and Many Alkaline Minerals

I believe there was once a "Garden of Eden" where humankind actually lived in perfect harmony with nature. Human bodies seem to have evolved on a largely alkaline, high fiber diet of mainly fruits, vegetables, tubers, nuts such as almonds and seed such as sesame. Before agriculture wild plants and herbs of the forest provided most of the nutrition and the soils were extremely rich in minerals, especially alkaline minerals such as lime, magnesium, potassium, trace minerals, volcanic ash, and salts. For protein, early humans must have lived off of raw fish, bird's eggs, and goat's milk. After agriculture was developed, the world population grew to unprecedented levels, and the same soil tended to be planted over and over again and the surrounding ranges tended to be overgrazed by domestic animals causing a gradual loss of minerals and a slow malnutrition or "aging process" in humans never before experienced where they started becoming more and more fragile, frail and wrinkled as they grew older. As vital minerals became scarcer and scarcer, and vaster quantities of acid forming foods such as cooked meat, wheat and rice introduced into the diet, tooth decay also started to show up.

Those who don't like the idea of using fish oil (If I can avoid it, I would prefer not to use products that require the destruction of the animal to obtain them) one can always try using butter oil only with vegetarian sources of A, D, phospholipids (found in lecithin), and essential fatty acids (found in fresh, cold-pressed flax seed oil) which might work just as effectively as cod liver oil for some people. One might try to consume more than the usual amount of vitamin D, or up to 4000 IU per day which is the same amount obtained from a few hours of sunshine. Of course, there is a well established relationship between lack of vitamin D and dental caries, especially in growing children. Because butter oil is expensive, a much less concentrated yet less costly source of this remarkable substance can be found in 100% pasture grazed raw butter from "Organic Pastures." The following ten steps may not only save one's teeth and gums, but also one's life. Why? Because many underlying causes of disease are affected as well.

1) Save your teeth with raw greens: There might be other options besides the "Factor X" butter oil to help maintain healthy teeth and heal dental problems. My theory is that if "Factor X" comes only from those cows lucky enough to be grazing in green grasses all day long, then why not simply add more greens to one's diet? It has been assumed by raw foodists for a long time that raw greens (high in vitamin K, chlorophyll and magnesium) such as lettuce, wheat grass juice, and chlorella can rebuild damaged teeth. There are also plenty of chlorophyll potions and supplements available in every health food store that might be of some benefit to tooth enamel.

2) Avoid sodas, colas, beer and other acidic drinks: Of course avoid all beverages such as sodas, colas, beer, coffee, alcoholic/sugary beverages, and "foods" such as sweets, dried fruit, refined carbohydrates, cakes, cookies, and all other such nutritional catastrophes widely and sadly mistaken for nourishment or food. If one has to have something, it would be far better to enjoy a refreshing non-sweetened herbal tea such as green tea. Avoid the modern American diet (MAD) as much as possible! The common American habit of eating pizzas, hamburgers, and chips, while drinking beer, colas and pasteurized milk is spiritually, morally and physically disastrous. Instead please follow the nutritional guidelines discussed on this page and on other parts of this website here and here. Please also be aware that even the most healthy food and substances such as citrus fruit, lemons, lemon juice, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar, acidophilus (essential for healthy digestion), vit. C crystals, and kombucha (recommended on other parts of my website) contain concentrated acidic substances that can remove tooth enamel if too much is consumed, too often. Never have snacks containing these substances, and never snack anyway, period. Have the kombucha, sauerkraut, etc. only as a small, but essential part of a main meal for flavor and better health, which should only be of benefit when part of a complete meal.

3) Live mainly on a raw food, alkaline diet: Live mainly on a raw organic diet of fresh alkaline forming fruits, vegetables and greens high in chlorophyll (spring greens, lettuce, wheat grass juice, kale, collards, etc.) in the diet as well. It would make a lot of sense to learn all one can about how to identify and remove most acid-forming food and foods high in mineral-robbing phytates from one's diet and learn how to live on a more alkaline-forming diet. Go here for more information on how to make one's entire diet more alkaline. One does not need to remove all acidic food from one's diet, as some are essential in small amounts. One needs to however be able to distinguish which are which so one can always benefit mainly from an alkaline forming diet which profoundly affects every aspect of the body, not just bones, teeth, saliva, and gums.

4) Supplement with extra calcium and all other minerals, A, D, E, K, antioxidants, etc: Supplementing the diet with coral calcium, one teaspoon of dolomite per 1.5 liters of ionized water (also add to juice, and make sure to have at least four grams calcium, two grams magnesium per day which is provided by 6 grams dolomite), liquid or granular lecithin(contains phosphorous in the form of phospholipids), raw greens (high in magnesium and vitamin K), kelp, a liquid colloidal mineral formula containing all 74 macro and trace minerals, and vitamin antioxidants such as vitamin A, C, bioflavonoids, vitamin D, E, the herb turmeric, circulation enhancing herbs such as cayenne and ginger, and especially large quantities of CQ10 and green tea will help maintain heathy teeth and protect the gums. Large amounts (more than 300 mg. a day) of the CQ10 might even help reverse gum loss. Gum disease can increase the presence of CRP (C-reactive protein) in the blood which is known to increase blood clotting, heart attacks and strokes. So for one's health, well being and longevity, one needs to have as little to do with gum disease as possible.

5) Use toothpastes containing only simple, healthy ingredients: After every meal, brush and soak teeth in a toothpaste containing CQ10, grapefruit seed extract, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), green tea, and calcium powder. Periobrite by Nature's Answer (www.naturesanswer.com) contains most of the above ingredients. This one and similar brands of toothpaste should be available in any health food store. However, avoid those products which contain fluoride which is a highly controversial substance. Fluoride only temporarily hardens enamel yet makes it even more susceptible to tooth decay later on and can be very toxic/fatal in large doses. Carefully brushing teeth, gums (and maybe tongue as well) after every meal is extremely important because brushing is essential for oral hygiene, brushing helps keep breath fresh, brushing prevents the build-up of unsightly stains, brushing helps to keep saliva more alkaline. Brushing removes particles of food that would otherwise leave damaging acidic residue on teeth.

7) Take a nap to brush your teeth: Lying down on one's back while brushing after every meal allows one to spend much more time and causes one to be much more thorough. While brushing always brush away from the gums (never toward them!) and also try "vibrating" the toothbrush while directly pointing it at the teeth (especially tops of molars) to loosen the tartar that often builds up on teeth and to go deeper into the cracks between molars. After brushing (hopefully for several minutes) remove the toothbrush (which should always be soft, fine bristled, and as new as possible) and if you have some spare time, allow the remineralizing product to soak in the mouth for 15 to 30 minutes. Brush after every meal and not only that, brush thoroughly to remove all acidic forming residue, tartar and ugly looking stains.

8) Drink alkalizing water ("mineral milk") instead of snacking: In addition to carefully brushing with the above remineralizing toothpaste(s), drinking a mixture of one to three teaspoons of dolomite for every 1.5 liters of alkaline (negatively ionized) water along with one to two tablespoons of a complete, 74 colloidal mineral solution, and 1/4 to 3 teaspoons of cayenne pepper (warning: HOT! but very effective circulation enhancer that can speed up the healing of gums and teeth) between every meal instead of snacking should also be a great help because its high pH (power of hydrogen) balance of alkaline minerals and negatively ionized water temporarily neutralizes the acidic residues and byproducts from acidic foods and acid producing bacteria on teeth which are the main cause of dental caries, while the circulation enhancing power of cayenne pepper seems to reduce and heal gum infection and reduce tooth-ache. The habit of snacking between meals is the worse thing for teeth, especially when it is the usual sugary junk food and phosphoric/citric/carbonic acid sodas so often consumed. However if one "snacked" instead on alkaline water and minerals between meals, one's saliva is bound to become more alkaline. Also one may not tend to feel as hungry because of the neutralizing effect alkaline minerals and ionized water has on hunger.

9) Keep your saliva alkaline: I would like to mention one most important factor for keeping one's teeth healthy is always having alkaline saliva. The alkalinity of one's saliva can vary greatly from individual to individual and from time to time depending on one's diet, source of drinking water, and genetic background. The continuing existence of teeth in the mouth depends largely on the chemical composition and pH of one's saliva, which if too low (acidic) allows much more tooth decay to occur. Alkaline saliva helps to protect the tooth enamel from acidic residues and is always essential to have if one is serious about keeping one's teeth for life! The best way to make sure one has high pH (alkaline) saliva is to always take some good mineral supplements high in calcium such as the ocean product called coral calcium which contains not only an excellent source of calcium but also all the trace minerals essential for health. 10) Make sure protein intake is high: Ramiel Nagel makes it very clear that the best results happen with high complete (usually of animal origin) protein diet, especially after using protein from raw food animal sources. Vegetarians should at least eat more legumes, sesame seed, sunflower and pumpkin seed, cooked eggs and more protein powder. This information may sound contradictory to having an alkaline diet, but not all protein is acid forming, some protein is needed to regulate acid/alkaline balance and is essential in the rebuilding of any injury including damaged teeth.

11) A serious and permanent commitment is essential: Natural dental health, tooth remineralization, and the successful healing of and prevention of dental caries requires a life-long commitment. Results may vary and never expect overnight miracles. Teeth need months under the right conditions to regenerate and these conditions sometimes can be tricky to maintain even with the information I am presenting here. "Can Nutrition Really Heal Serious Dental Caries?" and Other Frequently Asked Questions:

If I already have some serious dental caries, can they heal and completely recover? As long as one remains on the modern American diet (MAD) the answer is a definite NO. Once the outer tooth enamel has been lost the infection has most likely already spread deep within the tooth. It would usually be too late to avoid the drill, root canals, etc. required to stop the condition from getting far worse. However, a total and permanent commitment to an alkaline forming diet high in phosphorous, vitamin A, D, E, K, raw proteins, calcium, magnesium and other alkaline minerals, grass fed butter, lecithin, essential fatty acids, raw greens, circulation enhancing herbs, brushing with enamel building toothpaste, non-snacking, etc. may make it possible for even the worse decay to come to a halt and actually reverse and eventually heal. The tooth won't grow back but it is possible for it to heal and form a thin transparent shield inside the area of the cavity that gradually thickens over time. How would a vegetarian also benefit from the "Weston A. Price" research? There are many organic animal products such as organic raw milk and organic raw grass fed butter, raw organ meats, fermented raw fish, bone broth, and raw bone marrow products that Ramiel Nagel says are essential. I do not believe the organ meats, raw fish and bone marrow are necessary as long as one takes plenty of complete protein from other sources, avoids snacking, drinks plenty of "mineral milk" (dolomite) between meals, takes coral calcium, takes some form of liquid or granular lecithin, takes plenty of vitamins A & D and full-spectrum mineral supplements including all 74 macro minerals and trace elements, drinks grass fed, organic raw milk, uses only grass fed raw butter, takes cod liver oil, flax seed oil, uses mineral-building toothpastes after every meal, avoids pastry and flour products, and stays on an alkaline forming diet, etc. I don't think it is necessary in addition to all of the above to also eat raw organ meats, bone marrow, muscles, and/or fermented fish heads! Even though I hope it is not necessary to eat anything from and by which an animal is harmed, I am nevertheless providing links to Ramiel Nagel's website and video anyway because his findings are very interesting, educational, and are a valuable contribution to 100% natural and nutritional approaches to dental rejuvenation for which there is only a scant trace of information on the internet available. Ramiel also provides much information in his e-book for those who prefer to be vegetarian.

Is flossing really necessary? It seems that nearly every oral care professional I have studied insists that flossing is essential. I suppose for those who are stuck on the modern American diet (MAD) flossing may indeed be essential! One unnatural behavior often requires another to counteract it! However, as long as one follows all the guidelines on this page and other diet sections of this website I see no reason to floss. After over 50 years of not flossing my teeth I have never had any serious problems between my gums and teeth -- except when I did try to floss them for a few weeks! I never received any benefit from flossing whatsoever -- only cut or sore gums and the shoving of rotten food residue even further down between the gums and teeth so that my gums would flare up severely the next day. Flossing seemed a tremendous waste of time and effort and boy did it hurt whenever I accidentally drove that razor thin, sharp strand of cotton right through one of my gums!

This information sounds too good to be true, can one actually completely do without a dentist? Why should humans who did just fine for nearly three million years suddenly start needing dentists? Something's wrong somewhere! However, one must first carefully study and follow through with all the information on this page and on other pages and websites I linked to from my site.

Please read the book, Cure Tooth Decay: Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition by Ramiel Nagel. I think it might be a good idea to continue checking in with your dentist from time to time to see if the dietary and other changes really are healing your teeth and gums. One's approach, of course, must be individualized. For example one must decide whether a vegetarian or meat based diet will be consumed and/or to what extent if any continuing dental care and type of oral care is to be used. The vegetarian approach requires more supplements and better absorption than the meat approach however. I am trying the heavy supplemented vegetarian approach but with plenty of Norwegian cod liver oil, occasional small fish such as sardines and salmon, tufu, eggs, etc.

Important Mar. 7, 2009 update: After nine months on a heavily supplemented (mainly vegetarian) regimen using at least 6500 IU vitamin D and 6 grams of dolomite daily, and even with no butter oil(!), I am still getting amazing results even better than expected: not only has decay stopped, normal tooth color (white enamel!) is returning in areas where there was at one time only decay. From around 2002 to 2008 I was often worried about my teeth and how I was going to afford a dentist, face up to the dreadful treatment, etc. Now I am not worried at all and am truly grateful to Ramiel Nagel and Dr. Weston A. Price for showing me that teeth can actually regenerate! Whoever said teeth cannot heal themselves know nothing of the amazing healing powers of correct eating, nutritional supplements, and of the body!

Important May. 18, 2010 update: All my teeth and gums are in perfect health, better than ever before! Where I once had a huge cavity back in the years 2002 to 2008, the hole is still there but can tell it has healed completely. Even any remainling little problems such as sore gums or sensitive teeth, etc. completely vanished several months ago. All my teeth look very clean and white and feel very strong and firm and all my gums feel wonderful and are not receeding. At nearly 53 years old, all my wisdom teeth are still intact (dissolving or retreating back inside the gums a little), yet causing absolutely no problems whatsoever. These days I continue to avoid snacking, am eating much less often but taking all supplements including one tablespoon cod liver oil, 5000 IU vitamin D, fasting between whole, complete meals on watered down juices, colloidal minerals, dolomite and cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper is a vital circulation enhancer that does wonders for gum health and many other aspects of good health.

Important Nov. 22, 2010 update: Continued perfect health of teeth and gums, except even more total and complete fullness of well-being, giving my teeth and gums a deep-down solid feeling, like I am definitely doing something right! Amazingly, I also am continuing to make discoveries as to what really is essential and what is not, avoiding those foods that do not help while embracing only those that do. What really is important is plenty of Vitamin D, up to 5000 IU daily, two tablespoons fulvic (or colloidal) trace mineral complex, and liberal quantities of calcium and magnesium (dolomite at 4 teaspoons per half gallon) mixed with alkalized water and pure Vitamin C crystals (2 teaspoons per half gallon). One might take as many as six eggs per day for protein, and two tablespoons food grade yeast for phosphorous, along with one tablespoon of a full-spectrum vitamin-mineral liquid formula. To my great relief I found that it is not necessary after all to rely upon fish or meat or any fish oils or any kind of butter. The main factors turning out to be most essential are the dissolved trace and macro minerals, dolomite, food grade yeast (providing phosphorous) and the Vitamin D. Important Apr. 11, 2011 update: Another excellent way to improve bone (and tooth) mineral density: save your eggshells. Instead of simply throwing them out like everyone else does, I wash the eggs thoroughly before breaking them open (use same cautions as one using eggs that have not been cooked), grind them up in a high speed blender with soy or hemp milk for up to five minutes. This process dissolves most of the eggshell into the soy or hemp milk (or other favorite juice or beverage) into a surprisingly delicious, thick and creamy tasting mineral rich milk.

It is possible to get an incredible assortment of raw minerals, especially calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and most importantly, a huge selection of many other minerals such as boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, sulphur, silicon, and zinc in a form that is more easily to assimilate than rock minerals.

Perhaps even more significant is that thin membrane between the eggshell and the egg white that consists of the exact same material (hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan) used by the body to create and maintain that essential lining of the joints between the bones, maintain skin elasticity, and youthfulness of brain tissue. It is also essential for the gums, eyes, scalp, hair follicles, synovial fluid, tendons, ligaments, and all other connective tissue throughout the body. Pottenger's Cats: A Study in Nutrition by Francis Marion Pottenger - Editorial Reviews - Stay healthy - Pottenger's Cats is a classic in the science of nutrition. Dr. Pottenger discovered quite by accident that cats degenerated unless they were fed raw food. In his 10-year study of 900 cats, he found the optimal diet for his cats was 2/3 raw meat and 1/3 raw milk plus a little cod liver oil. If either the meat or the milk was cooked, the cats degenerated. And if both were cooked, the degeneration was much worse, and the cats could no longer reproduce by the third generation.

Some of the problems Pottenger found in the cats fed cooked food were: heart problems; nearsightedness and farsightedness; underactivity and inflammation of the thyroid; infections of the kidney, liver, testes, ovaries and bladder; arthritis and inflammation of the joints; inflammation of the nervous system with paralysis and meningitis. And in the third generation, some of the cats' bones became as soft as rubber. Lung problems, and bronchitis and pneumonia were also frequent. Moreover, the females became irritable and even dangerous, and the males became passive and lacked sex interest.

Do many of these conditions sound familiar? Pottenger, of course, realized that his cat studies didn't apply entirely to humans. He believed nonetheless that his findings for cats did have relevance for humans, and in his sanitarium he fed his patients much raw food, with considerable success. Weston A. Price reported in his book, "Nourishing Traditions" that all of the people's he studied worldwide included much raw food in their traditional diets and were almost entirely free of the degenerative diseases that are rampant in our junk food society, such as tooth decay, heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, digestive disturbances, etc.

If you want to stay healthy, you owe it to yourself to read both Pottenger and Price. Their eye opening photographs alone will make clear to you that you need optimum nutrition if you want to be optimally healthy.

Customer Review - Medical journalist Morton Walker, D.P.M., has an impressive list of credentials. He's written more than 70 books, fourteen of which were international bestsellers, has published more than twenty-two hundred magazine and newspaper articles, and appeared in numerous TV and radio talk shows. He's also received several awards and honors from various medical groups.

In his latest book, Elements of Danger: Protect Yourself Against the Hazards of Modern Dentistry, Dr. Walker takes on the dental profession. He focuses on the practice of using metal fillings, but also discusses other procedures, like root canals.

He says he found a "paradox, for the nature of dental care among industrialized nations has our dental health providers reacting to disease rather than keeping people's mouths functioning healthfully and well." He maintains that most dentists don't look at the patient as a complete individual or dental health as a part of overall good health.

Dr. Walker offers a thorough discussion of the potential problems of using metal fillings, especially those containing mercury. He includes a questionnaire that will help readers determine if their fillings are adversely affecting their health. He lists thirty symptoms of metal toxicity, including memory problems, depression, insomnia, heartburn, headaches, and fatigue.

Root canals can also lead to myriad health problems, particularly infection which can affect other parts of the body, and deterioration of the jawbone. He also includes a section on the dangers of fluoridation, reminding readers that fluoride is "an industrial waste product commonly sold as poison for killing rats and insects." He notes that the Food and Drug Administration now requires a warning label on all fluoridated toothpastes, advising consumers to contact a Poison Control Center if the toothpaste is accidently swallowed.

The final section of the book describes natural ways of achieving and maintaining good dental health, including guidelines for choosing a dentist that uses safe and non-toxic procedures. Dr. Walker also includes a list of resources.

Elements of Danger is must reading for those who have had or are contemplating metal fillings, root canals, or fluoridation. Get a copy for yourself, and an additional copy for loved ones who have had dental work, especially those with unexplained symptoms of illness.

Customer Review - Telling the truth, can often get a person into trouble. I don't know who wrote the 1 star reviews - presumably dentists, or morons who think that modern science is trustworthy.

I was a dental assistant in the military in the US, and what I do know is that many substances that dentists use are toxic, particulary that old standby, flouride, which is a derivative of aluminum and may in fact be responsible for the rise in Alzheimers cases in this country.

As a dental assistant, I was required to take any extra mercury amalgam and put it into a cup of glycerine. This is in order that the mercury fumes won't escape as quickly and overexpose the staff (including Dr. Pain himself). One then wonders why the dental community doesn't mind sticking this stuff in your mouth, forever.

Another danger is overexposure to x-rays - did you ever wonder why the assistant gets the hell out of the room and behind protective cover when taking your x-ray? Yes, overexposure - but we still don't know how much is too much.

This book needs to be read by dental patients everywhere, because whenever one gets any sort of medical treatment, in addition to the hoped for outcome of improvement, they are also exposing themselves to all sorts of additional risks.
